The Korean War in the 1950's, and the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union that followed set North Korea at odds with the rest of the world. The North Korean government is more akin to the cult of personality style of governmental system that was present in during the Soviet Union under Stalin, and as that type of government became less and less common over the course of the 20th century in East Asia and Europe, North Korea became more isolated.
