D is likely the correct answer, but A and C could also be correct.

D is likely the answer as the first step towards a successful Presidential run is to form an exploratory committee that can collect money on behalf of the candidate and pay bills on behalf of the candidate. This allows the candidate to go to Iowa and New Hampshire and talk to voters in early primary states about what they care about while also going to California and New York to start talking with big money donors about supporting their candidacy. Attending the party's convention and giving a speech is a great way to get known but it would not set one up for running THAT cycle. President Obama gave a famous speech during the 2004 Convention that started his candidacy for the 2008 nomination.
