The Smoot-Hawley Tariff was passed in June of 1930. This was very shortly after the Great Depression started. The goal in passing this legislation was to increase tariffs on imported goods. The goal of this was to increase prices of foreign goods. The US government hoped that this would encourage citizens to buy goods from American businesses.
