    The Emabargo Act was an attempt by Jefferson to stop British and French attacks on US shipping by preventing US merchant ships from trading with either and by closing all US ports to foreign trade.

    The results were:

    US - crippled the economy.

    Britain - none.

    Neither Britain nor France was nearly as dependent as Jefferson believed on trade with the US. British merchants sought out new markets in Latin America and Asia, and Napoleon had most of Europe under his control to plunder to prop up the French economy.

    As the Embargo Act was repealed 1 March 1809, it DID NOT lead to the War of 1812
