    Native Americans served in both the Union and Confederate military during the American Civil War

    They really fought on both sides. Generals such Ely S. Parker bravely served in the Union. But numerous tribes filled both ranks. Stand Watie, a prominent Confederate general went along with many Cherokee in joining the Conferacy and was one of the last generals to surrender.
