    The answer is slave labor or just slaves. During the Spanish colonial period, the economy was founded on exploitation, both of land and of Native American labor. This system rapidly turned into something very close to outright slavery: Native Americans were paid extremely low wages-if anything at all-to perform backbreaking labor on plantations and in mines.
