It is viewed by Locke, Jefferson, and others that the purpose of government is to protect peoples' natural rights through a social contract (an implicit agreement among the members of a society to cooperate for social benefits).

As it gives natural liberty and freedom to every human by birth, natural rights are very important.
Being a human we all are endowed with a universal law of natural rights, regardless of our age, gender, race and time. These rights include - freedom of life, happiness and liberty.
It is important because these natural rights cannot be overruled or tampered by any authority. It is based upon the concept of human being born with liberty, has naturally blessed with the right to live and right to law.
