The correct answer is A, as the statement is true. Because of his position as a clerk in an English firm with interests in Congo, E. D. Morel was able to publicize the mistreatment and exploitation of African slave labor on Belgian rubber plantations in Congo.

    Explanation:

Edmund Dene Morel was a British journalist, writer and political activist. In 1891 he obtained a job as clerk in a Liverpool shipping company. Since 1893, he began writing journalistic articles in which he condemned French colonial policy and advocated for the rights of the peoples of Africa.

Together with Roger Casement, Morel founded the Congo Reform Society, an organization whose activities were directed against the brutal exploitation of the indigenous people of the so-called Free State of the Congo, declared personal possession of the Belgian king Leopold II. Casement had previously become a member of a special commission set up by the British government to investigate the situation in Congo, the results of which were published in 1904 under the title Congo Report.

Morel founded his own newspaper, West African Mail, on the pages of which information was published on the situation in the Congo. In 1906, his book "Red Rubber" appeared in print, causing a wave of indignation in Belgium and Europe. After a scandal erupted (which occurred not only after the publication of the book, but also due to a number of other publications and circumstances), Leopold II was forced to sell the Congo to the Belgian government in 1908.
