There are several reasons why rebellion became an integral part of the consumer culture, especially in the postwar period.

Ironically the discontent with the same culture was on the rise in the postwar period as well as the need for individual expression. There were a lot of influential musicians who were as symbols of counter culture. Hollywood also jumped at the chance to profit from this and thus made a lot of movies with the theme of teenage rebellion.
