The process of electing a person for presidentiality has changed in multiple ways. In the first instance of this occurring, it was directly after the revolutionary war, and George Washington was the first elected official for the presidency. At this time, the runner-up would be the Vice president. This was true until several years later when Jefferson was elected president, during which he renounced that rule, making it so the President and VP both ran together. This rule has remained until today.
