It is the modern notation for AD-BC, which would be Ad anno domini, or year of the lord making reference to the birth or conception of Jesus, and BC which means Before Christ. So if someone was born in the 100, and died in thr 44 he most have lived on the Before Common Era because the BCE counts backwards from infinity till 0 which would be the year that Jesus was born.
