Established trade with the Native American tribes.

When the Dutch, French, and English first established settlements they relied on relationships with Native Americans for survival. The Europeans traded manufactured items for food and eventually the trade expanded to include goods created by tribes, animals, clothing, and weapons. The trade created between Native Americans and Europeans changed both cultures. The extent of the relationship didn't go much further than trade for the Dutch and English.

The French created deeper relationships with the Native Americans to include living with them, converting them to Catholicism, and even marrying the Native American women. The French and tribes they allied with created a profitable fur trade and a tolerant community.
