James Madison ended up submitting 12 amendments but only 10 of them were approved. They became the United States Bill of Rights.

James Madison's (1751-1836) amendments became the Bill of Rights that was ratified in 1791.

These amendments were made in order to achieve ratification of the U. S. Constitution. In 1787-8 there were many debates where Anti-Federalists opposed to the Constitution as it were because they thought it gave too much power to the government and didn't protect individual rights and liberties.

Thus Madison started drafting these amendments to meet these demands and to get the Constitution ratified. Constitution was ratified in 1788 and the Bill of Rights in 1791.
