During the late 1800s, there was a great agricultural, commercial and industrial development in the US. This took many European immigrants to go the US for economic opportunity. There was a rise of industrial American, dominance of wage labor and growth of cities.

During this time the second great awakening was happening and the change of religious thought also influenced the country. Earlier, the Calvinist tradition defended that humans could only be saved through the grace of God.

But later, the new evangelical movement came through and they had the conviction that humans had the ability to change their situation for the better, they could choose to be saved. They had an optimistic view of the human condition. This led people to work harder and push the country to better economic development.
