What was the Missouri Compromise and how did it lead to division

    The Missouri Compromise is the legislation that admitted Maine in as a free state, and Missouri as a slave state. This legislation passed to keep balance between the North and the South. It contributed to the division of the states because it made the issues of slavery more contentious between the North and South.
