There are a lot of reasons but the main reasons for exploration at settlements were the three Gs: God Gold and Glory, that as well as gaining power and territory.

There was a lot of religious persecution that took place in Europe during the time when England established colonies. In addition, England required natural resources and markets to sell goods.
