    Most midwestern cities were established near ri vers and lakes. In the advent of transportation of goods and people, cities begin as ports for convenience (where land traffic goes to sea, and vice versa), like Chicago and Milwaukee on Lake Michigan, or Cleveland on Lake Erie, etc.
