The massacre took place in a confrontation between locals and the British Army on March 5, 1770. After the incident, future American president John Adams, assumed the defense of the accused, who were charged with murder. The outcome of the trial was to exonerate six of the soldiers and to convict two of the other men of manslaughter, even though, they received a reduced sentence.
