During World War I, the Congress passed the Sedition Act in 1918. Why did many Americans consider this Act to be a violation of civil rights? The act compelled US citizens to enlist for draft. The act punished all US citizens of German descent. The act infringed upon the freedom of speech and freedom of press. The act prohibited disclosing any information related to the war.

    The Sedition Act took away some rights guaranteed in the first ammendment. Also many Americans felt that it was unfair that they were forced to fight in a war that was not their own. The U. S. foreign policy at the time was still based on the western countries and eastern countries leaving each other alone.
