What is the purpose of checks and balances in the Constitution?

A. They would keep any one branch from having too much power.

    The system of check and balances is the system whereby all three branches of the government (the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial) oversees, limit and check each other. Under this system, each branch is able to respond to the action of the other, for example, when Congress approves a bill, it has to be approved by the President before it becomes a law. And if the bill becomes law but it happens to be against the Constitution, the Supreme Court has the power to declare the unconstitutionality of the law.

    So, the main purpose of this system is to limit the scope of the branches and keep any one branch from having too much power.
