    Explanation:

    Patrice Lumumba, the hero of Congolese independence, was determined to achieve genuine independence of Congo and to have full control over Congo's resources. This of course was seen as a threat to western interests (specifically Belgium, the old colonial power, and the U. S.) in a crucial and very tensed historical time (the cold war). So 7 months after independence (1960) Lumumba was assasinated and a pro-western regime was installed.
