Martin Luther King Jr. talked about the Declaration of Independence during his speech "I have a dream"; which he delivered during the March on Washington on August 28, 1963, on Lincoln's Memorial.

King stated that when the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a "promissory note" to all men, not only white men, to guarantee the unalienable rights of life and freedom. He refered to the promise of life and freedom as a promissory note, meaning that it was an unconditional promise and that all Americans deserve that promise, he also stated that America had failed to keep that promise to the African American people. King made an allusion to the Declaration of Independence and stated that African American people wanted the same rights promised by the Founding Fathers, and that all Americans deserve the same rights, no matter their religion or their looks.
