Do the events of the Middle Ages, such as the Black Death and Crusades, teach us that Organized Religion is better at uniting people for a common cause, or better at causing immense, unnecessary suffering?

    Well, crusades we're necessary to protect Europe from invaders and the Black Death had nothing to to with religion.
