Henry B. Gonzales (1916-2000) was the first Mexican American to serve as Representative in the United States Senate. He supported Mexican American rights and fought against segregation in public facilities during his time as San Antonio City Council, and during his time in Congress. He served in Congress for 37 years.

During his time in the Senate, he became famous because for his role during the Brown v. Board of Education where he stopped eight out of ten segregation bills.

Henry Gonzales supported equal rights for all citizens, and when he was assigned to the Committee on Banking and Currency he worked in several legislative proposals for the New Frontier and Great Society.

He supported the Civil Rights Act, the Library and Service Act and the Equal Opportunities Act, and served as the official representative of Latin American affairs.
