Richard Henry Lee Of Virginia proposed a key resolution in which the colonies were free, independent, and that all political connections with Britain were null and void. In lighter terms, all ties with Britain regarding politics were abolished.

June 7, 1776, Richard Henry Lee, introduced this resolution in the Second Continental Congress, proposing independence to the American colonies. Certain congressman believed that he has proposed an immature proposition and because of that the approval was deferred until July 2nd, and on that day congress adopted the first part.
