Great Awakening is the collective name for a number of large Protestant revival movements that have occurred in the British colonies in North America and the United States since the 1730s.
These movements arose in the 18th century in response to the conversion of Christianity into an official moral teaching. The main feature of the Great Awakening was the emphasis on experiencing a personal meeting with God and the approaching Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Their followers did not initially have an organization and were spontaneous prayer groups and Bible study groups in which the leading role was played by charismatic leaders and wandering preachers.

The Great Awakening was a religious revival that impacted the English colonies in America during the 1730s and 1740s. The movement came at a time when the idea of secular rationalism was being emphasized, and passion for religion had grown stale ... The result was a renewed dedication toward religion.
