    Georgia's largest geographical region is the Coastal Plain, covering approximately 60 percent of the state. Plateau is the farthest to the northwest of the state. Piedmont contains the highest population. Blue Ridge is the farthest to the northeast. Ridge and Valley region is characterized by long lines of mountains separated by areas of rich farmland. The soil is suited for agriculture, pasture and harvesting hardwood as well as pine timber.
