    He was a famous war officer from the United States that defeated the British navy at the Battle of Lake Champlain which launched him to military stardom. The battle itself was a battle in the larger Battle of Plattsburgh which was a decisive battle in winning the entire war which is why the victory in the war is often ascribed to him.
