    The Olmec are known as innovators and inventors. Their influenced spread not only to the Mayans but also to other civilizations in Mesoamerica. Some of their inventions include a writing system, the calendar and number zero. Archaeologists have found proof of the Long Count Calendar along with the concept of Zero were used years before the Maya was a functioning civilization. Further inventions and concepts attributed to the Olmecs that other civilizations used are the ballgame, religions and human sacrifice, popcorn and compass.
