The battle that was one of the few victories that native Americans had over U. S. troops in the 19th century was: The Battle of the Little Big Horn. The Battle of the Little Bighorn (which took place along the Little Bighorn River in the Crow Indian Reservation in southeastern Montana Territory), was the most important defeat for the U. S. troops during the whole of the Indian wars in the West: It was part of the Campaign of 1876, an effort by the U. S. Government to force the Sioux tribes onto their Reservations. The battle resulted in a total US casualty count of 268 dead and 55 greatly wounded, including four Crow Indian scouts and at least two Arikara Indian scouts, the winning beligerants of the battle.
