    The Suez canal is located in North Africa, in the Isthmus of Suez in Egypt. The canal connects the Red Sea with the Mediterranean Sea. It was built because it would be the shortest sea trade route from Europe to India, Asia, and the the islands in the West Pacific Ocean. The canal was ready for operations in 1869.
