    They wanted to increase sales of their own products.

    They wanted to boost their own brands ' profits. We concentrate on buying goods and services in their countries to stimulate their economies. It was not the time to patronize imports because it would only harm the economy to get more imports. They therefore limited trade by means of tariffs.
