A reason why they wanted to find a new sea passage was safety and being economic. There was fewer pirates on the sea than there were bandits who would plunder and steal during the long journey. The sea journey was also much quicker as the ship could travel faster and didn't have to stop. They also wanted to avoid dealing with middlemen and wanted to directly go to manufacturers and buy things so as to reduce cost.
