A. Was in control of the islands

After the Japanese attacked the Philippines and defeated the United States Army under General McArthur, they took over the Philippines forcing the US Army to fled away from the Philippines. The remaining US Army that stayed behind was either still fighting and with the Filipino soldiers until the US Army returned or died fighting or in Bataan Death March.
