The Treaty of Tordesilla was signed between Spain and Portugal in the year 1494. This treaty had a huge impact on the United States of America. According to the treaty Spain and Portugal divided the world into two parts by constructing an imaginary line that divided eastern America into North and South. Spain was given the power to establish as many colonies as they wanted to the West of the line and Portugal was given the right to colonize east of the line. Portugal wanted the control of the trade routes and they got what they wanted. The United States went in the control of both the countries of Spain and Portugal.
