Operation torch was the code-name for the Anglo-American of Colonial France's possessions in North Africa during the second World War.

The sea-borne invasions took place in 3 different areas which are part of modern Morocco and Algeria.

The plan was proposed and developed by the British Empire with the United States following the lead.

The overall idea was in response to requests by Russia to occupy the Germans in other places so as to divert pressure away from Russia, which was, at the time, under aggressive onslaught from the Nazis.
