In the 20th century, many new nations emerged with independence on the African continent. Half a century prior, nearly all of Africa was under European imperialistic rule, and the colonial territories were divided and drawn out for the Europeans during the partition of Africa in in 1884. The division of land was not in respect to the various ethnic borders and boundaries that existed before European contact. When European powers left Africa and decolonized the region, many ethnic groups that were previously hostile were placed together in these new nations that were formed by Europe. This greatly impeded progress for African nations especially because they were not familiar with ruling themselves in these new democratic governments set up by Europe. This resulted in power grabs and a rise in certain African authoritative figures who mismanaged governmental rule.
