    Between 1860-1870 China's population was around 450 million or more, thats like three times it's level in 1500. This resulted to land shortages, famine, and a rapid increase in the rate poverty among the rural population. Heavy taxes, inflation, and greedy local officials further worsened the farmer's situation and this made them to resolve to the option of borrowing from the West.
