How did the Nullification Crisis increase tensions between the Northern and the Southern states?

The Nullification Crisis was an episode of conlfict between the powers of a state and those of the US federal government. South Carolina attempted to declare null and void the federal tariffs of 1832 and 1828. South Carolina's move was led by John C. Calhoun, who argued that the Constitution gave the states the power to block the enforcement of federal law. In November 1832, South Carolina announced the tariffs were null, void and nonbinding in its territory. President Andrew Jackson issued a statement that confirmed the supremacy of the federal government in December that year. Many historians believe that South Carolina's move was really motivated by fears about abolition movements in the North, foreshadowing the Civil War.
