When the electoral college vote system was enacted by the framers of the Constitution, what was the reason that the electoral system was created as opposed to just basing the results on the popular vote? Is that reasoning still relevant today?

    The electoral system was informed by the decision that the populace at large is ignorant, uneducated and uninformed to make rational political decisions and choices and thus there was a fear that this ignorant majority would be cheated out to make poor political choices at the ballot.

    the current population can not be referred to by those terms as there are cases that they have made better decisions at the ballot, only to be overturned by the electoral college.
