Spartan boys were taken from their families at age 7, they spent 20 years training for military duties. Girls were raised to be strong by playing sports and such for the state. Because the men spent almost their whole lives at military camps, the women, therefore, had more independence.

With the Athenians, the men had control over their families. The boys were formally educated in their studies, such as literature, math, and public speaking. Music education was also highly valued.
