Although not a technical obelisk, which is defined by a pyramidal top piece, the large stele that demonstrated Axum's wealth and power is impressive. The stele is around 79 feet tall, solid block of weather-resistant stone, almost like granite. This stone is believed to possess come from a quarry several miles south of the town.
