The first amendment states that the people have a right to the freedom of religion, speech, petition, and assembly. The first amendment was created in order to protect the people from the government. With the rule of Britain, the people feared of being put into jail, especially assembling to talk about overthrowing the king. In addition, contrasting, the main reason for the people moving to the 13th colonies was due to religious freedom away from the established religion of Britain. That is why there is an Establishment Clause that states that the government cannot establish a national religion or do anything that restricts or advocates for a particular religion. It is important because it allows freedoms to the people and the right for conversation unlike tyrannical rule such as North Korea. But even freedom of speech can be limited especially in the cases of fighting words or being a clear and present danger such as Shenck vs US in the supreme court case.
