The main cause of unstable leadership in the empire was due to the fact that roman soldiers were promised money to overthrow the emperor. the death of constantine caused the empire to be divided into three parts. diocletian's new split system of latin west and greek east failed. the emperors were too busy purchasing luxury items to rule the empire.
