During the post-Civil War era in the United States, government institutions promoted a policy whereby only those who owned land or were literate could vote, thereby negating the chances for newly freed slaves to vote and continuing their plight. The structural approach of prejudice refers to the division of society between social groups that includes elite and non-elite group of people. Elite taking the top place at the structure dominates the non-elite groups in society. The power difference among different social groups creates a hatred and negative view of others.
