    A compromise was made.

    Explanation:

A plantation owner and a man from the south (I think it was Rutledge) refused to sign the declaration of independence because it stated that all slaves be made free. As a southerner, he made his income through farming and needed slaves, therefore he didn't yield to the statement and hence, asked for it to be removed. The votes for the declaration were to be umanimous, so the statement was to be removed from the declaration of independence. As a result, when the colonists revolted and won, there was still slavery. Also, the growing country needed a support for its economy which farming and plantations are very big parts of.
