    He reached out to the War Democrats in 1864, and manged his re-election. He anticipated the war's conclusion, and pushed his view of a moderate Reconstruction. He wanted to reunite the nation speedily through a policy of generous reconciliation, in a time of lingering and bitter divisiveness. However, he didn't live to see it because he was assassinated on April 14, 1865, only days after the surrender of Confederate commanding general Robert E. Lee.
