    The correct answer is 1. can be used as an energy source by organisms. Carbohydrates are quick and easy energy while fats are energy in storage. If we don't have carbohydrates to provide energy, we then burn fats. That's why for example bears eat so much, they need fats so they can burn them while they hibernate because they don't take any carbohydrates then.
