When voters are represented by an elected official, it is what is termed as Representative Democracy.

A representative democracy is a form of leadership in which the populace elects a number of representatives who serve the function of acting in their interest as opposed to autocracy (where only one person rules), and direct democracy (where every person rules).

The power of representatives is usually limited by a constitution or other measures to balance representative power. Examples of representative democracies include the United Kingdom, the United States and Germany. Most of the governing bodies in the world follow the representative democracy system.
