Why is latin america called latin america?

    It's most likely because of the European conquest of South America, especially by the Spanish. The main religion of Europe at the time was Catholicism and the language of Catholicism was Latin. And so as Catholicism spread through South America through Spanish and other European missionaries so in turn was Latin.
